Nadia Fixes Money

The minimum is built to keep you paying.

A credit card minimum barely covers the interest, so the payoff can stretch for years and cost you more than you first borrowed. Put the 4 numbers from your statement in below and see it. The math runs in your browser. Nothing is sent unless you ask for the script.

You'll pay back
$ 15,574
on a $ 6,000 balance.

$ 9,574 of that is interest, gone on top of what you borrowed.

Paying only your minimum, you are Debt-Free in 10 years 8 months.

Now Make That Number Smaller.

83% of credit card holders who asked for a lower interest rate got one. Most people never ask, because they don't know they can.

10 years 8 months

Paying your minimum of $ 122 every month.

Pay Additional
4 years 9 months

Pay $ 172 a month instead and you are out in 4 years 9 months, saving $ 5,913 in interest.

How I Calculated This

Each month the interest is the balance times 22% divided by 12. Your $ 122 payment covers that interest, and the rest lowers the balance.

Paying $ 122 every month, the balance clears in 10 years 8 months. You pay back $ 15,574: the $ 6,000 balance plus $ 9,574 in interest.

Paying $ 172 a month, it clears in 4 years 9 months and saves $ 5,913 in interest.

This assumes a fixed interest rate, no new charges and the same payment every month.

Some statements let the minimum shrink as the balance shrinks. That stretches the payoff even longer, so paying the same amount every month is the faster path.

Questions people ask

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

It depends on how you pay. On a $ 6,000 balance at 22% APR, paying only a $ 122 minimum takes about 10 years 8 months and costs $ 9,574 in interest, more than you first borrowed. Add $ 50 a month, paid the same every month, and it clears in 4 years 9 months. The calculator above shows both for your own numbers.

How this number is figured. This is an illustration, not your credit card's actual terms. It assumes a fixed rate, interest that compounds monthly at the rate divided by twelve, and the same minimum payment every month. Each month it adds the interest, subtracts your payment, and repeats until the balance reaches zero. Your own issuer sets the minimum formula, the rate, any fees, and the compounding method, and those vary, so treat this as a model of how minimums behave, not a statement about your account. Method version 2, figures as of 2026.

Why does the minimum payment take so long?

Because most of a minimum goes to interest. At 22% APR, the first month's interest on $ 6,000 is $ 110, so only $ 12 of a $ 122 payment touches the debt. Some statements also let the minimum shrink as the balance shrinks, which stretches the payoff even longer. If the rate is high enough, the minimum never covers the interest at all and the balance simply grows.

What pays a credit card off faster?

2 things move the number the most: paying more than the minimum, and lowering the interest rate. Even a small extra amount, paid the same every month, cuts years off the payoff. When you are ready to build a plan around it, the free course walks you through it step by step.
